A longtime Presiding Elder of the 13th District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, he pastored churches in Chattanooga, Middle Tennessee, and the Memphis area. Upon his retirement from active ministry, he served for over twenty years as Presiding Elder of the North Memphis District. The last time I saw Lorraine, I was visiting home in November 2012. Prior to that, it would have been over 20 years since I last seen her.

Soon it will be time for our hedgehogs to hibernate. Hibernation is one of the most challenging times of the year for hedgehogs. With their natural habitat disappearing fast, they can often struggle to find suitable homes for the winter. Hedgehogs can eat low-fat dry cat food to meet most of their nutritional needs. Fill a small ceramic dish with food and allow the hedgehog to free-feed. You will also need to include a water bottle or ceramic dish filled with water.

Use the 2 brace pieces to join them together but be careful where you place them! Firstly you need to leave room for the corner post then screw the first one in place. Mark out a 125mm hole before screwing the second one in position. Instead of joining the long side pieces together and screwing them to the corner posts, I would use the corner posts to join the front and back end pieces. This would negate the need for two brace pieces either side of the opening and we could have moved the entrance hole nearer to the corner. Before cleaning your hedgehog home, it's best to check that there's nothing inside it.

As it is best to leave the hog house undisturbed, you could use trail cameras to keep an eye on activity at the entrance of your hog home. By weighting down the roof with logs rather than nailing it shut, you will be able to remove it to clean the inside. If you carefully lift the roof and there is hedgehog in the house, quietly replace the lid and leave it be.

When to put out a hedgehog house

You can do this in April, after their hibernation but before hedgehogs start producing hoglets. However, the ideal time is in October before they go into hibernation, and after most of the litter have been weaned. They should have a large compartment that is insulated from cold and heat, with a smaller entrance corridor that will keep your hedgehogs safe from badgers, dogs or other predators.
